The Experiment

A group of scientists placed 5 monkeys in a cage and in the middle a ladder with bananas on top...

The experiments of Harry Harlow and his associates at the Primate Laboratory of the University of Wisconsin are described in the textbook Principles of General Psychology (1980 John Wiley and Sons)

  1. Why dont they try this experiment with human children? Oh yeah, that would be inhumane. But its fine to hose down and cause pain for caged monkeys. They are "beneath" us. Simply because they don't speak our language. Wow. Yay, a new experiment using our closest relatives as the pawns. Sick.

    1. It's not an unethical experiment geez... Every new thing you do is an experiment. You could do it to children too. I'm sure someone already has.

    3. The experiments were done in the 1950's. And some of the experiments were much worse than this.

  2. you realize this never actually happened, right? It's meant to "teach you a lesson." No one ever did this to monkeys.

  3. Lol Some of the monkeys crying abuse need sprayed with the hose. Please stay off our genetic ladder. You missed the whole point of the story because "You are the point".

  4. According to the aforementioned source, this particular experiment actually did _not_ happen.

  5. You're basically telling us to repeat the history as we did not see the outcome for ourselves. The monkeys did great. But the matter your are approaching is more complex to be explained by this simple experiment.

  8. Everybody stuck on the experiment. They ain't have to do the monkeys like that but the experiment is erelevent when you look at life as a whole and focus on the cycles that a lot of us are stuck in generation after generation, people want change but dont nobody want to change. What we say? "That's how things are done around here" If one of the monkeys up the ladder would have split the bananas with the team I bet the conclusion would have been different.

  9. Yes the experiments are true... Look it up. But they were done in the 40's/50's. Their wasnt laws to protect animals back then. To assume this happened recently is idiotic. The purpose of the study and story is to show us how we are psychologically influenced by others actions. Stop complaining about things that occured about 70 years ago because you are missing the big picture.

  11. Why doesn't someone teach the contributor of this piece to proof read before publishing? Oh yeah, because that's how we've always done it.

  12. Water is natural and doesn't hurt and the monkeys were beating each other up. Stop being a bunch of bitches.
